Alabama Veteran DB Enters Transfer Portal
The Crimson Tide's secondary has already seen some movement in the transfer portal, with redshirt freshman Jahlil Hurley entering the portal when it first opened. Alabama's secondary was hit a little harder on Saturday, when veteran starting defensive back DeVonta Smith entered the transfer portal according to Pete Nakos of On3 Sports.
Smith, a former four-star prospect from Cincinnati, Ohio, just wrapped up his redshirt junior season at the Capstone.
Standing at 6-foot and 205 pounds, Smith earned a starting spot in the secondary during Fall camp this season. He started all 12 games for Alabama in 2024, registering 30 total tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, five pass breakups, one quarterback pressure, and one forced fumble.
He was ranked as the No. 314 overall player in high school, and Smith chose the Crimson Tide over the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Smith's vacancy in the secondary is expected to be filled by either sophomore Red Morgan or redshirt-senior DaShawn Jones, who transferred to Alabama from Wake Forest in the spring transfer portal window in May 2024.
