Alabama WBB Off to Hot Start
With the Iron Bowl going on and Bama men's basketball ranked in the Top 20, Kristy Curry's UA women's team has quietly but imrpessively started its season with a 7-1 record after taking two of three games at the Betty Chancellor Classic in Katy, TX [home of Iron Bowl hero Jalen Milroe].
Bama capped the trip with a big win over Liberty [former home of Hugh Freeze], 72-47 Sunday. That win came on the heels of a five-point win over No. 20/15 Louisville Friday.
Bama suffered its only loss of the young season Saturday when the Tide fell to Gonzaga, 68-58.
The leading scorer so far for Bama has been senior Sarah Ashlee Barker. Jay's daughter is averaging 15.3 points per game. Also averaging double digits are Aaliyah Nye at 11.4 and Jessica Timmons at 11.3 points per game.
Point guard Loyal McQueen averages 9.4 points and 2.3 assists. The top rebounder so far is freshman Essence Cody, who with her 7.5 boards per game average might be a sequel to Terrance "Mount" Cody, though the two are not related. Barker is averaging six rebounds per contest.
Next up for the Crimson Tide: a trip to Syracuse, NY. Alabama returns to action Nov. 30, taking on Syracuse as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge. Alabama will face the Orange inside the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., at 6 p.m. CT on the ACC Network and on Catfish 100.1 FM and its app. Roger Hoove of CTSN will be on the call.
