Alabama’s 15-Year Super Bowl Streak May End in 2021

Alabama’s streak of having at least one former player on the sidelines for the superbowl may be coming to an end.

For the past 15 years Alabama football has been represented in each super bowl, whether it be a star player, a backup or a promoted practice squad player. This year, injuries and consequence have put that streak in jeopardy. 

When the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play in Raymond James Stadium on Sunday Feb. 7, wide receiver Gehrig Dieter will be the only former Alabama player that will have a chance to attend the game. 

Dieter currently operates as a practice squad player for the Chiefs. Due to COVID-19 NFL regulations, teams get two more practice squad players to activate for games. In the small chance the Chiefs do activate Dieter, he will be on the sidelines for the game and will continue the prideful streak of the Crimson Tide.

Tampa Bay would have continued the streak for Alabama, but former Alabama star tight end O.J. Howard ruptured his Achilles in the Buccaneer’s win against the Los Angeles Chargers in week 4 and was ruled out for the season. Howard accumulated 11 receptions for 146 yards and two touchdowns in four games before his injury.

As far as the universities across the state of Alabama go, they will be well represented. Auburn will have cornerbacks Jamel Dean and Carlton Davis on Tampa Bay’s sideline, Troy will be represented by Buccaneer’s defensive tackle Steve McLendon, and Chiefs’ star wide receiver Tyreek Hill played football at West Alabama.
