Former Auburn interim head coach Carnell "Cadillac" Williams announced Tuesday on social media that he is staying at the university and has been named an associate head coach to newly-hired head coach Hugh Freeze’s staff.

It was reported that Williams was the first target of Freeze for his new staff, and the move was made official Tuesday morning.

Williams took over head coaching duties after the university fired Bryan Harsin at the end of October after their loss to Arkansas. The former running back only led the team to a 2-2 record, but re-energized the fanbase and brought some ounce of hope to a program that seemed almost down for the count.

Williams quickly became a fan favorite during his time as head coach, but appeared to never be in real contention for the final head coaching position with big names like Lane Kiffin, Deion Sanders and Hugh Freeze being thrown around.

The announcement of Freeze’s hiring on Monday was met with mixed reactions from around the country and from the Auburn fanbase. Freeze has a troubled history, but that wasn’t enough to stop him from being hired.

Only time will tell if the Freeze hire was the right move for the program, but the hiring of Williams to keep him on campus is one that makes the Auburn family very happy about.
