Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward suffered a broken jaw on Wednesday after a stomach-turning fastball from Mets' pitcher Jonathon Neise hit him squarely in the face. Heyward laid on the ground for three minutes before walking off the field on his own.

The starting outfielder was taken to the hospital for x-rays, where it was revealed his jaw had been broken in two places which could cause him to miss the remainder of the year for the NL East-leading Braves, according to Fox Sports 1.

Heyward will undergo surgery on his jaw Thursday and the Braves will make an official statement about the length of his recovery after that time.

Atlanta currently owns the best record in baseball and leads its division by 15.5 games at the time of the injury, but it will be difficult to replace this loss. Heyward's numbers aren't overwhelming, but the 24-year-old was hitting .317 (.405 OBP) with six homers and 16 rbi.
