College Football around Alabama: Championship Week
Tua Tagovailoa made history in the 83rd Iron Bowl as he found the end zone a school record six times in a 52-21 victory over the Auburn Tigers.
Alabama heads into championship Saturday with a 12-0 record and will face off with the Georgia Bulldogs in the Southeastern Conference Champoinship Game.
Around Alabama, UAB will make a return trip to Middle Tennessee for the chance at their first ever conference title while Jacksonville State remains alive in the FCS Playoffs.
UAB's Rematch at Middle Tennessee
The UAB Blazers dropped their regular season finale at Middle Tennessee 27-3.
With the loss, UAB will return to Murfreesboro for the Conference USA Championship Game next Saturday.
The Blazers struggled to mount any sort of offense as they managed just 91 total yards and eight first downs for the entire game. Their only score came on a 35-yard field goal on the game's opening drive.
Middle Tennessee's defense had a field day against UAB recording eight tackles for loss including two sacks.
Blue Raiders signal caller Brent Stockstill passed for 261 yards with two touchdowns in the win.
The Conference USA Championship Game kicks off at 12:30 PM next Saturday from the campus of Middle Tennessee.
Troy Falls at Appalachian State
The Troy Trojans had an opportunity to play their way into the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game but came out on the short end of a 21-10 decision at Appalachian State.
The Trojans had issues taking care of the football as they committed three turnovers including two fumbles that led to two of Appalachian State's three touchdowns in the first half.
After trailing 21-3 at halftime, Troy crossed the goal line on Sawyer Smith's 21-yard touchdown pass to Deondre Douglas.
For the game, Appalachian State outgained Troy 201-62 and did not forced four turnovers compared to one for Troy.
The Trojans finish the regular season 9-3 and await where they will go bowling.
Jacksonville State Advances in the FCS Playoffs
The Jacksonville State Gamecocks used a strong second half surge to defeat East Tennessee State 34-27 in the 1st round of the FCS Playoffs.
ETSU led 20-10 at halftime but JSU rallied for 24 unanswered points to advance to the second round.
Gamecocks quarterback Zerrick Cooper connected with wide receiver Shaq Davidson for two passing touchdowns. The first came on a five-yard scoring toss in the third quarter while the second touchdown from 13 yards away gave JSU a 27-20 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Free safety Marlon Bridges sealed the win for the Gamecocks on a 32-yard pick six.
Jacksonville State travels to the northeastern United State to face the Maine Black Bears with an 11 AM kickoff this Saturday from Orono, Maine.
