College Football around Alabama: Heartbreak City in Auburn
While Alabama was preparing for their SEC opener at Ole Miss, much of college football including teams from the Yellowhammer State experienced a wild day on the gridiron.
Auburn's Heartbreak vs. LSU
For the second consecutive season, the Auburn Tigers fell to the LSU Tigers in dramatic fashion thanks to LSU placekicker Cole Tracy 42-yard game winning field goal.
The Tigers from Baton Rouge started out hot with an interception of Jarrett Stidham on Auburn's first drive of the game, a one-yard touchdown run from Clyde Edwards-Helaire and a 33-yard field goal from Tracy.
For most of the second and third quarters, Auburn took control by scoring 21 unanswered points. Jatarvious Whitlow and Shaun Shivers each added seven-yard scoring runs while Stidham added a four-yard touchdown toss to Darius Slayton to push Auburn to a 21-10 advantage.
From that point on, LSU regained momentum with a second Tracy field goal and quarterback Joe Burrow's 71-yard scoring strike to Derrick Dillon to draw the Bayou Bengals to 21-19.
On LSU's final drive of the game, they marched 52 yards in 14 plays milking off the final 5:38 of the game to set up Tracy's game-winner.
For Auburn, the defense failed to get off the field in the fourth quarter as LSU snapped the ball 18 times compared to Auburn's eight snaps.
Troy Upends Nebraska
For the second consecutive season, the Troy Trojans went on the road and stunned a power-five conference opponent.
After shocking LSU last season, the Trojans toppled Nebraska 24-19 in Lincoln.
Troy got out to a 17-0 lead on a 37-yard field goal from Tyler Sumpter, a 58-yard punt return from Cedarius Rookard and a nine-yard rushing touchdown from B.J. Smith.
The Cornhuskers fought back with 13 straight points in the second and third quarters to cut Troy's lead to 17-13.
B.J. Smith added his second rushing touchdown with 6:45 left in the game on a 26-yard scoring jaunt.
Nebraska tallied the final points on Andrew Bunch's seven-yard pass to JD Spielman.
After a three-and-out for the Trojans, the defense stood firm as junior safety Will Sunderland intercepted Bunch to seal the win.
