University of Alabama golfer Cory Whitsett has been selected as the Southern Golf Association’s National Amateur of the Month for June after capping a remarkable month with victory in the prestigious Northeast Amateur at Wannimoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I. The rising senior from Houston, Texas, won the event against a field loaded with nationally-ranked amateurs by two shots with a 10-under 266 total.

The All-American Whitsett closed the triumph with a final-round 63 on the par-69 course. He opened June by providing the final match win to clinch the NCAA Championship for Alabama at the Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course outside Atlanta. The next week, he led the U.S. team to victory over Europe in the Palmer Cup with a 3-0-1 record in his matches at Wilmington (Del.) Country Club. Whitsett followed that with a second-place finish in the elite Sunnehanna Amateur in Johnstown, PA, as a tune-up for his victory in the Northeast to close out his stunning run.

Consolation honors were awarded to Auburn junior Michael Johnson, who broke several records with his 28-under 260 total to win the Dogwood Invitational at Druid Hills, Atlanta. Johnson won by 7 strokes after closing with 63-64 in the final two rounds.
