Emily Powell: Defensive Player of the Week
HBCU volleyball is the topic for today as Stillman College's Emily Powell wins Defender of the Week for matches from September 2-8 as reported on hbcuac.org in their volleyball awards. It is reported that Powell was consistent when she stepped on the court with 5.43 digs per set. An imposing player as hbcuac.org also states she led Stillman College with 31 digs at Tuskegee University and 15 digs in her last three matches of the week, a .943 reception percentage, and three service aces on offense. Powell has 76 digs in total.
In an interview with Ms. Powell, she weighs in on how it feels to be defensive player of the week stating "It feels great to be named defensive player of the week, I told people who are close to me and even my coach last week that this was a goal of mine this season; it's great to accomplish that goal.
Powell is in her second and last season as a Stillman Tiger after transferring from Wallace State Community College. Emily has played competitive volleyball for 10 years. Starting her career as a setter, Powell stated "Seeing my hard work to become a better defensive specialist pay off means a lot. Before ending the interview Powell told me, "I would love to see our team make it to the conference tournament this year and play hard, I'd love to be the defensive player of the week again in the future. I'd also love to see my teammates receive players of the week in their positions this year."
Congratulations to Emily Powell from Tide100.9. We hope to continue covering the volleyball team and more Stillman Athletics as the year progresses.
