Former Alabama basketball player, Betsy Harris, was named the head coach of the East Central Community College women’s basketball program.

The Mississippi Native will be returning home to lead the Lady Warriors who located in Decatur, Miss.

Harris was a member of the Crimson Tide from 1990-94, where she helped lead Alabama to three NCAA Tournaments, including a trip to the Final Four in 1994. In her final season at the Capstone, Harris earned All-SEC honors, NCAA Midwest Regional MVP and a spot on the Final Four all-tournament team.

The Tide alum played overseas for a couple of years before starting her coaching career in 1999. Harris was as an assistant coach at West Alabama (1999-01, 2003-10), Troy (2001-02), East Central (2002-03), and Meridian Community College (2010-11). She finally got her first head coaching job at Coastal Georgia in 2011. In three seasons, Harris led the Mariners to an overall record of 68-27.

Harris most recently served as the head coach at Florida Southern College for eight years. Harris led the Moccasins to six consecutive NCAA Division II Tournaments and two Sunshine State Conference championships. In her eight-year stint at Florida Southern, Harris earned WBCA South Region Coach of the Year (2018-19) and Sunshine State Coach of the Year three times (2015-16, 2017-18, 2018-19).

East Central Community College will look to improve after finishing the 2021-22 season with an overall record of 11-11 and 7-7 in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference.
