Former Miss. State Basketball Coach Richard Williams Explains SEC’s NCAA Woes [Audio]

Legendary Mississippi State basketball coach Richard Williams stepped Inside the Locker Room to provide his thoughts on the recent issues with the lack of SEC teams in the NCAA Tournament.

With only three SEC teams making the field of 68 this season and just 11 teams combined over the last three seasons, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey hired former Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese as a consultant for men’s basketball in the SEC.

While Williams expressed doubt about whether anyone in the SEC commissioner’s office can change the SEC’s NCAA Tournament fortunes, the former Mississippi State coach believes that the NCAA Selection Committee do a better job in how they select the tournament field.

“The problem I see. Sometimes, I think the criteria changes every year. Sometimes, it’s your non-conference schedule you’ve got to have and then other years, well, you didn’t have a good enough RPI. Who knows what the criteria is?”

Williams led Mississippi State to three NCAA Tournament appearances including their only Final Four appearance in 1996.
