Former Tide Broadcaster and Coach Named Jets Interim GM
The New York Jets name Phil Savage as the interim GM following Joe Douglas being let go after a loss to the Indianapolis.
Phil Savage is a former assistant coach and broadcaster for the Crimson Tide. From 1987-89 Savage worked as a graduate assistant and tight ends coach during his early years with the team before joining the UCLA Bruins in the year of 1990.
Later in his career working in radio, being a broadcaster for The Crimson Tide Sports Network, he was with the network for eight years (2009-2017) Savage witnessed the Tide win five national championships under former head coach Nick Saban.
Savage has held many positions in his career, some being with teams such as Baltimore, Cleveland, and Philidelphia. Savage began his NFL career as a defensive assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns in 1991 before becoming a scout. During his scouting days, Phil was able to draft many talented players such as Ray Lewis and Ed Reed while with the Baltimore Ravens.
The new interim GM played as a quarterback in college while also being a three-time all-conference shortstop in baseball. Graduating with a degree in English from the University of the South, located in Sewanee, Tennessee, and a master's degree in physical education from the University of Alabama, Savage is more than accomplished in his career and continues to take on responsibilities.
After working in the broadcast booth, being the front insider for ESPN, and providing analysis for SiriusXM, Savage took over Reese's Senior Bowl executive director position for seven years (2012-2018), before he joined the New York Jets in 2019.
