Future Alabama Golfer Davis Riley Qualifies for 2015 U.S. Open

Future Alabama men’s golfer Davis Riley has qualified for the 2015 U.S. Open with an eighth-place finish in the 36-hole U.S. Open sectional qualifying tournament, which was played on Monday at the Germantown Country Club in Memphis, Tenn.

“It’s nice to know all the hard work pays off,” Riley said after the event. “I struck it really well here at Germantown. I told myself to be patient. I just had to see those putts going in on the back nine.”

Davis, who signed a National Letter of Intent with the Crimson Tide last fall, shot rounds of 69 and 67 to finish in eighth place with a 6-under par 136. The field at Monday’s section had a total of 121 golfers competing for 10 spots. He finished tied with two-time U.S. Open champion and seven-time PGA Tour victor Retief Goosen.

There were 787 golfers competing in 10 sites from around the country for 58 qualifying spots in this year’s U.S. Open, which equates to approximately a seven percent chance of earning the coveted tee time. The 115^th U.S. Open will be held June 18-21 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.

Davis, who just finished his senior season at Presbyterian Christian in Hattiesburg, Miss., is one of 14 golfers who will be competing at this year’s event as amateurs.
