Alabama Golfers Headed to Torrey Pines for US Open
Fans of Crimson Tide golf will have more than Justin Thomas to pull for at the next Major Championship, the US Open at Torrey Pines.
Two recent graduates, Wilson Furr and Davis Shore managed to survive the grueling qualifying process and have punched their tickets for the event which takes place June 17–20.
Furr, a native of Jackson, MS, received the opportunity of a lifetime at the Hilton Head Sectional qualifier. He only had alternate status to the Sectionals after the local qualifier in Glencoe, AL.
His decision to attend the Hilton Head sectional was a wise one as he got a spot after four withdrawals. Furr then made the most of his opportunity, shooting 5-under par over 36 holes to tie for the low score.
Shore, a native of Knoxville, TN local qualified in his hometown while still an amateur. Since then he has turned professional and was entered in the Sectional qualifier over the weekend at the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta GA. Once there, Shore left no doubt that he belonged shooting 11-under par to win the medalist honors.
Another Alabama golfer, Robby Shelton, who played through 2016 and left school after his junior year as a 3-time All-SEC player, qualified as well yesterday.
Shelton, who has had modest success on the PGA tour in recent years advanced directly to sectional qualifying without having to make a local stop due to his PGA tour status. He fired a 5-under par total at the Springfield, OH sectional after competing over the weekend at the Memorial tournament.
We wish the best of luck to all the Crimson Tide golfers competing in the US Open and will provide updates throughout the tournament.
