Gordo Head Football Coach Resigns Thursday
Gus Smith, the head coach at Gordo High School, announced his resignation to the team this past Thursday, November 21, 2024, following three years with the Greenwave.
Smith has a 31-6 record with the Green Wave over three seasons, leading Gordo to two Region Championships in 2022 and 2023. The announcement came a week after the Greenwave's dismal 42-14 second-round loss to Fyfee High School, which ended Gordo's season and left the Greenwave with a 10-2 record after finishing second in Class 3A Region 5 behind the Winfield Pirates. Smith also earned Class 3A Region 5 Coach of the Year twice, once in 2022 and again the following year in 2023.
Smith told Tuscaloosa News, "I'm thankful for the opportunity to be the head football coach at Gordo." Smith continued: "I will forever be grateful of our players at Gordo for what they have done for me and my career."
When Smith spoke with the Tuscaloosa News about his future intentions, he mentioned that he hopes to continue coaching following a good tenure at Gordo, where he was a head football coach for the first time in his career after transitioning from firefighting in 2020.
Smith Told Tuscaloosa News that "I have a few opportunities right now either in college or staying in high school," Smith indicated that this is only the beginning of his coaching career.
Meanwhile, Gordo's former head coach wants to return to his hometown and assist out, telling Tuscaloosa News that "I'm ready to get back home to the Gulf Coast and give back to my community."
Following Smith's departure, Gordo is looking for the 46th head football coach in the school's history.
