Gordo Hires 7-Time State Champion as Head Coach
The Gordo Green Wave has made a splash with its most recent head coaching hire, luring away seven-time state champion Chris Chambless out of retirement from Mississippi to take over the powerhouse program in Alabama 3A High School Football.
Chambless spent 25 years as the West Point head football coach in Mississippi but hung up the whistle in December 2023. Now, just over a year later, Chambless is moving to the state of Alabama to take over a strong program in the Gordo Green Wave. Gordo's previous head coach, Gus Smith, resigned following Gordo's second-round loss to Fyffe.
Chambless led the West Point Green Wave to eight consecutive state championship appearances, winning five state titles with West Point, including one during his final season.
He was approved as the new head coach of Gordo Football on Thursday evening, during the Pickens County Board of Trustees meeting. Chambless went 206-45 during his 18-year tenure as West Point's head coach, winning a total of seven state titles. He may not have to ditch any of his Green Wave merch, traveling 58 minutes east to take over as Gordo's head football coach.
