Jameson Williams Believes Alabama Would’ve Beat Georgia with Him Not Getting Injured
Alabama's star wide receiver Jameson Williams believes that if he didn't tear his ACL against Georgia in the National Championship, the results of the game would have been much different.
"I felt like we would’ve won the game," Williams said at the NFL Combine on Wednesday. "Just — things happen, you know."
Prior to tearing his ACL early in the second quarter of a tied game, Williams had four catches for 65 yards, and was looking to be well on his way to having a repeat of the performance he had against Georgia in the SEC Championship game, where he managed 184 receiving yards. Alabama went on to lose the national championship game to Georgia, 33-18, after being outscored 20-9 in the fourth quarter.
Williams admitted to re-watching the game multiple times to see exactly how his injury happened.
"I was trying to see what happened. I just couldn't believe it happened to me," he said. "It was something I never thought would happen to me."
After spending two seasons at Ohio State, where he only caught nine passes in his second year on the team, Williams transferred to Alabama. He had an immediate impact for the Crimson Tide, hauling in 79 receptions for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns during 2021 in a season that he found himself to be Heisman winning quarterback Bryce Young's number one target.
Just a few days after the championship game, Williams declared for the 2022 NFL Draft. He, of course, cannot compete in any of the workouts at the combine as he's still recovering from his injury, but he's still participating in the media interviews at Lucas Oil Stadium, where the event is taking place at the same place where his injury occurred.
Williams is still projected to be a first round pick by many draft analysts, though he was predicted to be chosen early in the first round before the injury, whereas now he is predicted to be a late first rounder.
