Recently retired former Cowboys and Raiders tight end Jason Witten has been named the head coach at Liberty Christian School in Denton County, Texas, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Witten, now in his second retirement, had a brief stint in the Monday Night Football ESPN broadcast booth during the 2018 season before deciding to return to playing in 2019.

In his return to the Cowboys in 2019, a 37 year old Witten had a very admirable season, hauling in 63 catches for 529 yards and four touchdowns, according to Pro Football Reference.

The Cowboys elected to part ways after this season however, and Witten gave it one last go around with the Raiders in 2020, catching only 13 passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns.

Witten, an alumni of the University of Tennessee and former first team all SEC tight end, has long been thought of as a potential future coach once his playing days were over. Obviously, for now you can scratch him off the list of potential additions to Josh Heupel's staff at Tennessee, but perhaps this could be a stepping stone for Witten to ascend to higher levels of coaching down the line.

Witten will certainly have his work cut out for him at Liberty, as the 2020 Warriors stumbled to a 2-7 record overall including a 1-4 record in their district. They are currently ranked 368th in Texas.
