Justin Thomas wasn't able to win his second major of the year or mount an improbable Sunday comeback once more. The Alabama alum carded a fourth-round 70 to finish at 4-under overall in the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews.

Thomas was 14 shots off the lead entering the final round after an even par round three. He made the weekend cut with a 2-under round two. He ended up finishing 16 shots out of first place. The tournament was won by Cameron Smith, who rallied with a record-setting 30 on the back nine to edge Cameron Young by one stroke. Rory McIlroy was in the hunt as well but wasn't able to eagle the par-four 18th to force a playoff. He finished third.

Thomas, meanwhile, had an eagle and three birdies on his front nine. He was 3-under heading to the back nine but carded a double bogey on 14. He had five birdies on Sunday, the most in one round for his Open. He couldn't eclipse the 70 score, a number he matched after a Friday 70.

In four 2022 majors, he boasts one win. Thomas won the PGA Championship in a playoff for his second career major title. The Masters was his best finish apart from that- he was tied for eighth place.

At The Old Course, Thomas wasn't the highest-placing former Alabama golfer. Trey Mullinax vaulted into the top 20 after a third-round 66 and carded a 69 on Sunday, placing himself at 9-under for the Open and tied for twenty-first. That was the same score as World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, the winner of the 2022 Masters. Mullinax was right at the cut line heading into the weekend, and was not a part of the British Open field until last weekend.
