DeBoer can Reintroduce Alabama as a Formidable Presence on National Stage with Rose Bowl Win
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Later this afternoon, the Alabama Crimson Tide will take on the Indiana Hoosiers for the first time in program history in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Rose Bowl. It's the Tide's second trip to the Rose Bowl in three seasons, and the third time Alabama will play in the illustrious game this decade. Meanwhile, Indiana has only played in the Rose Bowl one other time: 1968.

The Hoosiers fell to OJ Simpson and the USC Trojans, who were playing a home game at that point. Meanwhile, Alabama is 1-1 in Rose Bowls since the turn of the 2020s, with another chance on Thursday against the Hoosiers. The Rose Bowl is historic, and so is the Crimson Tide.
Alabama is the third-winningest football program in college football, behind both Michigan and Ohio State. The Tide holds 18 national championships, which is second all-time. The Tide's first national championship came in 1925, when Alabama defeated the Washington Huskies to claim the school's first (of many) national titles. The Rose Bowl holds more historic significance for the Tide beyond its first national title, however.
Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban won his first national championship at Alabama in the Rose Bowl, defeating the Texas Longhorns 37-21 in January 2010 to claim the first of six national titles that Alabama would win under Saban's 17-year run in Tuscaloosa.
Alabama has used the Rose Bowl twice to announce its presence and return to prominence in the college football world. Now, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has the chance to do it again in a new era of college football.
DeBoer and Alabama have faced their fair share of adversity since January 2023, when DeBoer was hired by the Crimson Tide following Saban's retirement. The Tide lost to three unranked opponents during the 2024 season and held a measly 2-4 record away from Tuscaloosa. Alabama fans, who had come to expect championship-level dominance weekly under the old regime, watched their beloved Crimson Tide get dominated time and time again by opponents far inferior to the Crimson and White.
2025 started the same way, with DeBoer and the Tide falling to the Florida State Seminoles in week one: a team that emptied the tank for the Alabama game, not realizing there were still 11 games left afterward. The Tide flipped the script for the remainder of the season, going 5-2 away from Bryant-Denny Stadium this season. DeBoer has a chance to reintroduce the Tide as a national powerhouse and a presence that should be taken seriously when discussing national championship pursuits in the modern era of college football.
What better stage to do it on than the granddaddy of them all against the No. 1 seed in the country?
Alabama will face No. 1 Indiana in the Rose Bowl on Thursday, January 1, 2026, in Pasadena, California. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CT.
