Alabama and head football coach Kalen DeBoer have agreed to a new contract, according to reports by On3. DeBoer's new contract was added to the document for the Alabama Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday afternoon, where the Board will review and likely approve new contracts for several football staffers, including DeBoer and defensive coordinator Kane Wommack, as well as head basketball coach Nate Oats and assistant Preston Murphy.

DeBoer's name was linked to a pair of openings this past season, with rumors circulating around the Penn State opening late in the season after the Nittany Lions fired James Franklin. DeBoer's name was also linked to the vacancy at Michigan after the Wolverines fired head coach Sherrone Moore with cause prior to the bowl game against Texas. On3 also reported that DeBoer was in negotiations for a new contract back in December, but nothing had been agreed upon. Now, the Crimson Tide's head coach has a new deal in place, pending Board of Trustees approval.

DeBoer's previous contract, which he signed in January 2024 after he took the Alabama job following Nick Saban's retirement, paid him $10.25 million for the 2025 season, where Alabama went 11-4, appeared in the SEC championship, and won the first round of the College Football Playoff. His current contract was set to increase to $11.75 million in his final season, with the contract set to expire in December 2031.

DeBoer's Contract Details

DeBoer and Alabama have completed a seven-year contract extension, according to Bama 247. The contract, currently waiting approval from the Alabama Board of Trustees, will increase DeBoer's salary to $12.5 million annually. His new deal includes an amended buyout: $10 million through January 31, 2027. It drops to $8 million through January 31, 2028, and $6 million through January 31, 2029.

DeBoer just finished his second season with the Crimson Tide, accumulating a 20-8 overall record, including 11 wins during the 2025 season for the Crimson Tide.

Kalen DeBoer released a statement, via the University of Alabama, following the announcement of the extension:

“My family and I would like to thank the Board of Trustees, Chancellor Trant, President Mohler, Director of Athletics Greg Byrne, our athletics administration and football staff, this community and the University for their continued support of Alabama Football,” said DeBoer. “We are excited about the opportunity to continue our time in Tuscaloosa with this contract extension. This University has become a special place to us, and I look forward to working to ensure that Alabama football remains at the forefront of college football. This program has a long history of success and an unmatched tradition that I was eager to be a part of two years ago, and I cannot wait to keep coaching our guys and bring more championships to Alabama.”

Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne also released a statement:

“We are pleased to extend Coach DeBoer and are proud to have him leading the Crimson Tide football program,” said Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne. “He is an excellent coach and has done a commendable job developing our student-athletes. Thanks to President Mohler, Chancellor Trant, and our Board of Trustees for their support and approval of this extension.”
