Kane Wommack Notches First Win as South Alabama Head Football Coach

On Dec. 2, 2017, the South Alabama Jaguar defense gave up a game winning touchdown to the New Mexico State Aggies with 32 seconds left in the game to end their season with a 4-8 record. This was the last game for defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and the rest of the 2017 South Alabama coaching staff.

After three underwhelming seasons under a new coaching staff South Alabama Athletic Director, Joel Erdmann, decided to make a change and chose Wommack as the new head coach.

Before coming back to Mobile, Wommack served as an assistant coach for the Indiana Hoosiers, one year as the linebackers' coach and two years as the defensive coordinator. Wommack had a successful tenure in Bloomington and looked to bring that energy back to Mobile.

After a successful spring and summer, Wommack's team was set to began their 2021 season.

The Jaguars first test would come against the Southern Miss Eagles, another team coming into the season with a new head coach.

After falling 7-0, quarterback Jake Bentley came alive and threw two touchdowns in less than two minutes to put the Jags up 14-7 in the second quarter.

Wommack's "Swarm D" mentality stomped the Eagles as the Jag defensive forced four turnovers and held USM scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Jaguar offense tacked on 10 more points in the third quarter to make the score 24-7.

The final touchdown came in the fourth quarter on Davyn Flenord's 48-yard pick-six to seal the deal for the Jaguars making the final score 31-7.

Wommack's squad looks to go 2-0 as the Jags travels to Bowling Green, Ohio to face the Bowling Green Falcons Saturday.
