It only took a few minutes at SEC Media Days before Nick Saban addressed the biggest position of interest for fans and media heading into 2015: Alabama's starting quarterback.

Anticipating the question coming, Saban went ahead and updated the status of his signal callers.

"I know you're anxious to ask me about the quarterback situation," Saban said in his opening statement. "But that's going to be one of the keys to the drill in terms of somebody taking the bull by the horns at that position, being assertive, playing with confidence, distributing the ball and executing in a positive way, being a good decision-maker, and showing leadership at the same time."

Following Blake Sims' record-setting senior season, Saban and his staff were left with little experience on the roster. Senior Jake Coker was expected to slide into that spot after a full year learning the system, but he was unable to solidify the starting role during Spring. That doesn't mean the staff isn't pleased with his progress.

"I think (Coker's) made a tremendous amount of improvement," Saban said. "I think that a better understanding, better knowledge of the system, better knowledge of what we expect, what's expected of him in our offense are all things that have contributed to his confidence and his performance level. We just want to see him continue to develop the kind of consistency to make the kind of decisions and judgments to process the information quickly and make quick decisions that allows him to play winning football at his position."

When Fall practice starts up next month, Alabama will be right back to where it was when spring practice ended. Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin will work with his stable of quarterbacks until one of them separates from the pack. As of now, that's expected to be Coker or redshirt freshman David Cornwell.

But Saban made it clear that they won't rush the process, meaning you shouldn't expect to hear anything concrete for some time.

"We need somebody to take the bull by the horns this year and be that kind of player for us at that position," Saban said. "I think we have several guys that are capable of it. I don't think anybody's come to the forefront as of yet, and I don't think it's something that we can force to happen. I think we've got to let it happen. And I cannot give you a timetable of when that's going to happen."

Unless one of the candidates takes a big step forward in August, this question could linger well into the first week of the season.
