Oklahoma HC Brent Venables Following Oklahoma’s 24-3 Upset Victory Over Alabama Saturday Night
Following Oklahoma's 24-3 home victory over seventh-ranked Alabama, Sooners head coach Brent Venables spoke with the media about his team's performance on Saturday night.
Venables began his press conference by saying, "Well, we finally got the results we wanted when we put it all together," with the Sooners finally finding a sweet moment in this long disappointing season that saw them lose four of their last five games before heading into this matchup, having been outscored 129 to 56 in their previous four losses. That wasn't the case tonight, as the Sooners cruised to their second conference victory by 21 points.
Oklahoma's third-year head coach praised his team for hanging in there and continuing to "chase success," with Veables stating that "Sometimes it's (Success) not loyal to you and sometimes life's not fair," but tonight his players are getting a taste of success with the Sooners dominating the Crimson Tide on both sides of the ball, with Oklahoma recording 325 total yards, with 257 of those coming on the ground behind the legs of Sooners quarterback Jackson Arnold (131 yards).
Venables was the defensive coordinator for the Clemson Tigers from 2012 to 2021, and he helped the Tigers win two CFP National Championships, both against Alabama. Oklahoma's head coach returned to his roots tonight, with his defense executing an incredible game plan that shut down Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe, who not only rushed for under 10 yards on 15 attempts but also threw three costly interceptions to the Sooners' defense, which came away with a pick six on one of these takeaways when Kip Lewis took it 49 yards to put Oklahoma up 24-3.
Oklahoma's head coach stated that this win was "affirmation now again that when you put it all together we're good enough, even with one hand tied behind our back roster as of today with the countless injuries," with the Sooners entering Saturday's game against the Crimson Tide with 12 players on the injury report.
To finish Venables' news conference, he was asked what his thoughts were on fans crowding the field with time still on the clock, to which he answered, "You can't blame them; they are just excited and premature, but no, it was a good problem to have."
Oklahoma will improve to 6-5 with tonight's win, making them bowl-eligible. Venable and the Sooners will attempt to build on this victory as they prepare for a night game against the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge on Saturday, November 30th, 2024.
