Alabama is ranked outside of the top three in the preseason poll for the first time since 2009, breaking a 14-year streak that Coach Saban and Alabama held.

With the current 12-team College Football Playoff model, Missouri would be the first team left outside of the playoffs due to the automatic bid to the conference champions. Utah would earn the automatic bid for the Big 12, Florida State would earn the automatic bid for the ACC, Georgia would earn the automatic bid for the SEC, and Ohio State would earn the automatic bid for the Big 10. Additionally, the highest-rated Group of Five champion earns an automatic bid, leaving Missouri and LSU on the outside looking into the 12-team College Football Playoff.

Oregon, Texas, Alabama, and Ole Miss would earn home games for the first round of the College Football Playoff.

The AP Poll, which is used for rankings prior to the release of the first College Football Playoff Poll in November, will be released on Aug. 12.
