South Carolina’s Head Coach Shane Beamer on Saturday’s 25-27 loss against the Tide
Following Saturday's defeat against the Crimson Tide, head coach of South Carolina Shane Beamer discussed his team's performance and how the Gamecocks can rebound after a defeat like the one the Gamecocks suffered on Saturday.
Beamer had a strong response to how Saturday's game went and remarked that no matter how hard his team worked or how many excellent plays they made, it doesn't matter because "at the end of the day you're judged by the final score, and 25 points wasn't enough"
South Carolina's head coach stated that he and his team are "sick of this feeling" with the Gamecocks failing to finish games, with this being Beamers and the Gamecocks' second fourth-quarter lead blown this year, with South Carolina squandering a one-possession lead with less than 11 minutes to go in the fourth quarter in the Gamecocks' 33-36 loss to the LSU Tigers last month.
Despite the loss, South Carolina made significant progress on offense, particularly in the passing game, with Gamecocks redshirt freshman quarterback Lanorris Sellers throwing for over 235 yards and two passing touchdowns. South Carolina's offense gained 375 yards compared to the Crimson Tide's 313 yards. Beamer did not appear surprised by his team's success in a hostile environment, noting, "No one was surprised by this." We expected this. We competed in all three phases."
The Gamecocks defense executed their job, recording two interceptions, one of which came in the fourth quarter when O'Donnell Fortune intercepted Jalen Milroes' pass in the endzone, denying the Crimson Tide any score in the redzone.
South Carolina's special teams performed admirably despite a missed 51-yard kick that put the Gamecocks up 22-20 with about six minutes left in the fourth quarter. Shortly after this missed kick, South Carolina's special teams recovered a successful onside kick, giving the Gamecocks a chance to win the game with less than 50 seconds left.
South Carolina's head coach defended his young quarterback after Sellers made several of costly errors in the fourth quarter of their defeat to Alabama this past Saturday. Beamer claimed that "I thought he (Lanorris Sellers) did enough to win us the football game".
South Carolina will fall to 3-3, while Beamer and the Gamecocks will aim to correct their mistakes from Saturday's loss and achieve a victory next Saturday when they face the 18th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners on the road.
