Lonergan, a 6-foot-2, 214-pound quarterback from Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia, joined the Crimson Tide ahead of the 2023 college football season. He appeared in just one game in 2023, completing two passes for 12 yards and five yards rushing in Alabama's 66-10 win over Chattanooga.

In 2024, Lonergan appeared in two games, with one rush for 16 yards in Alabama's win over Western Kentucky, and completing five passes for 23 yards in ALabama's win over Mercer.

Lonergan was a two-sport athlete in high school, playing both football and baseball. During his junior campaign, he passed for 3,412 yards and 32 touchdowns. Lonergan was a consensus four-star prospect committed to Alabama over South Carolina and Stanford.

Lonergan was the third-string quarterback in 2024 and would have competed with Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell in Spring 2025 for ALabama's open starting quarterback position if Jalen Milroe entered his name into the 2025 NFL draft.

Lonergan held offers from Stanford, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Miami, among other schools.
