No Need to Panic Over Alabama Baseball’s Postseason Struggles
On Thursday, Alabama baseball was dominated by the Florida Gators 13-3 to go one-and-done yet again in the SEC baseball tournament, with the Crimson Tide falling to 1-3 in Hoover under third-year head coach Rob Vaughn. Florida exorcised its regular-season demons against the Crimson Tide after the Gators were swept by Alabama during the regular season, including a no-hitter by pitcher Tyler Fay against the Gators in the regular season.

Fay continued his hitless streak in the first inning against Florida, but the right-handed pitcher couldn't keep the streak going as Florida scored five runs on six hits with two solo home runs to open up the scoring onslaught from the Gators. The Gators ended the day with 13 runs on 16 hits against the Crimson Tide. It was the Tide's first run-rule loss since April 24 at Tennessee, and the most runs Alabama had given up since the Tide lost 15-6 to Arkansas on April 11.
Alabama had a seven-game win streak during conference play, including back-to-back sweeps of Florida and Auburn, and was in line to be a top-eight national seed, meaning the Crimson Tide would be playing in Tuscaloosa at Sewell-Thomas Stadium until the College World Series, if Alabama made it that far. With Thursday's blowout loss, Alabama's seeding is now in question. The Tide will certainly host a regional in Tuscaloosa next weekend, but if Alabama is able to handle its business at home, will the Tide hit the road for Super Regionals or remain at home?
The postseason record under Rob Vaughn is jarring for a team that secured a top-four seed in the hardest conference tournament in college baseball. If Alabama wants to take the next step and become a contender, no matter the regular season success, the Tide will need to step up its game in the postseason.
"I think it just starts really just in practice," shortstop Justin Lebron said after the game, "and just going back and just seeing what we can do and just really starting there and just believing in ourselves. We know we're good enough. We've shown that time and time again this year, and just really trusting in each other and trusting in ourselves."
Alabama's sweeps against Florida and Auburn proved the Tide wasn't a fluke this season. We know Vaughn and the Crimson Tide have the talent to win, with Alabama taking the series against then-No. 5 Tennessee and then-No. 1 Arkansas in 2024 in Vaughn's first season, finishing year two at 41-18 overall with series victories over then-No. 19 Texas A&M, then-No. 9 Oklahoma, and then-No. 6 Georgia. The Crimson Tide finished the 2026 regular season 37-18 with sweeps over No. 18 Florida and No. 5 Auburn, and series victories over No. 11 Oklahoma and No. 15 Ole Miss. However, the Tide is winless in the NCAA tournament so far under Vaughn. By no means is it time to panic over Alabama's lack of postseason success in the third year of a new head coach. But Alabama needs to find a way to flip the script in the postseason.
Alabama's next appearance on the diamond will come in the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Selection Show will be on Monday, May 25.
