Alabama Pieces Together 7-3 win over Troy
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama (15-3) took down the Troy Trojans (6-10) off the back of 12 free passes to win their final game 7-3 before they make the trip to Lexington for their first SEC series of the season against Kentucky.
Bobby Alcock earned credit for the win, scattering four hits and one earned run across three innings with four strikeouts.
The Crimson Tide got started early as Troy starter Chase Cartron plunked Bryce Fowler and Justin Lebron, who both reached scoring position via a double steal. With one out, Luke Vaughn lifted a sac fly to bring home Fowler to score the first run of the day.
Cartron worked around the traffic to keep the Alabama scoring limited to a lone run. Troy head coach Skyler Meade opted to pull Cartron in the second, bringing in Dylan King from the bullpen.
Jason Torres immediately jumped on King, launching a first-pitch breaking ball into left to double the Alabama lead.
The Crimson Tide continued to work against King, eventually forcing Meade to pull him in favor of Hayden Smith, the third Trojan pitcher of the eventual eight on the evening. With bases loaded and one out, Lebron lined a single through the left side to bring home Peyton Steele and Brennan Holt to push the Tide's lead to 4-0.
From there on, the Crimson Tide cruised, adding on three more runs thanks to a pair of sac flies in the fifth and sixth and a John Lemm double in the seventh.
The four Crimson Tide relievers, Evan Steckmesser, Sam Mitchell, Matthew Heiberger, and Hagan Banks, allowed a combined two runs — one earned, one unearned — one hit, four walks, while striking out six batters.
The Crimson Tide travels north to Lexington to take on Kentucky for its first taste of midweek action.
