Alabama Escapes Nashville with Gritty Overtime Win Over Vanderbilt

The Alabama women’s basketball team (12-10, 3-8 SEC) earned a tough, 77-71, overtime win at Vanderbilt (12-12, 3-7 SEC) on Sunday.

The game started off tight as both teams exchanged leads throughout the first half, leading to a 31-31 score at the break. The third quarter proved to be just as tight, as the score was tied at 48 heading into the final frame.

Vanderbilt started the fourth quarter off strong, jumping out to a 53-48 lead early. The Tide battled back and a Hannah Barber three-pointer tied the game at 62, with 2:08 left in the quarter.

Vanderbilt’s Sacha Washington hit two free throws putting the ‘Dores back up by two, but Alabama’s JaMya Mingo-Young hit a jumper in response, tying the game at 64 with 1:18 left in the fourth quarter. Both teams were unable to convert in the final minute, sending the game into overtime.

Alabama's Brittany Davis quickly scored five points putting the Tide up, 69-64, early in the overtime period. After a pair of Commodore free-throws, the Tide would stretch the lead out to six, 72-66, with 1:24 left. Mingo-Young drained five free-throws in the final minute of play, securing the 77-71 victory.

“I thought today our kids really stepped up,” said Alabama head coach Kristy Curry. “Anytime you can win in this league on the road it can give you confidence.”

Three Tide players scored in double figures including Brittany Davis (25), JaMya Mingo-Young (20), and Megan Abrams (14). Alabama shot a season-high 55.1% from the field.

Vanderbilt was led in scoring by Brinae Alexander with 19 points. The Commodores shot 41.2% from the field.
