Alabama Football Assistant Leaves Program

Silly season is upon us. Players are leaving college football programs left and right, as are coaches. Tuscaloosa is no exception.

Alabama outside linebacker's coach and special teams coordinator Coleman Hutzler is leaving Nick Saban's staff per multiple reports and sources. Hutzler is set to take over as defensive coordinator at Mississippi State per Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, among others.

Hutzler just finished his second season with the Crimson Tide as outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. He's helped develop Will Anderson, Dallas Turner and Chris Braswell during his time in Tuscaloosa as well as ran the special teams.

Hutzler won't be making his first move. He's spent time at South Carolina, Texas and Ole Miss before joining Saban in Tuscaloosa. Hutzler was nominated for the Broyles Award in 2017 during his time in South Carolina while he oversaw the Gamecocks special teams.

Hutzler played linebacker at Middlebury College and then began his coaching career at the University of San Diego.

The veteran assistant will join Jeff Lebby's staff in Starkville and take over a defense that finished 41st in total defense, allowing 350 yards per game. His first task will be finding new defensive leaders since graduate linebacker Jett Johnson departed the Bulldogs program.
