Alabama tight end Hale Hentges was named a semifinalist for the 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy, the National Football Foundation announced Wednesday morning.

Hentges is among 179 candidates from all levels of the NCAA and NAIA named to this year’s semifinalist list. Barrett Jones was Alabama’s first Campbell Trophy recipient in 2012. The National Football Foundation will announce this year’s finalists for the award on Oct. 31. The semifinalists will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as part of the 60th NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. The winner of this year’s Campbell Trophy will see his scholarship increased to $25,000.

The Jefferson City, Mo., native has given his time to Habitat for Humanity and been active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes during his time in Tuscaloosa. On the field, Hentges has been a proficient blocker with excellent receiving skills. He has played a key role in helping the Tide running game rank as one of the best in the nation during his career. Through four games this season he has three catches for 33 yards and two touchdowns.

The Campbell Trophy has been presented annually since 1990 by the National Football Foundation. The trophy honors the senior college football player who excels academically, athletically and in the community. This year’s winner will be announced at the 61st NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4 in New York.
