Alabama Football’s Michael Locksley a Finalist for the Broyles Award
Alabama offensive coordinator Michael Locksley has been chosen as one of five finalists for the 2018 Broyles Award, the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced on Monday.
The Broyles Award honors the nation’s top college assistant coach. Former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was the award’s inaugural winner in 2009.
In his first season as Alabama’s offensive coordinator, Locksley is overseeing a Crimson Tide attack that is averaging 49.0 points and 538.0 yards per game in 2018. The Tide has already set school records for points scored (588) and passing yards (3,985) in a season and is within 400 yards of the UA single-season total offense record (6,456 yards through 12 games). Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has thrown for 3,189 yards and a school-record 36 touchdowns in 2018. He is just the fourth quarterback to throw for 3,000 yards in a season at UA.
Joining Locksley as finalists this year are Army defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, Clemson co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Jeff Scott, Mississippi State defensive coordinator/safeties coach Bob Shoop and Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chip Long.
The winner of the 2018 Broyles Award will be announced on Dec. 4 in Little Rock, Ark.
