Over the weekend, a picture began making circles of the mascot used by the Alabama Frozen Tide hockey team:

While the mascot received ridicule in some places, others questioned why the mascot was not the Crimson Tide's Big Al.  I spoke with David Noble, the Director of Special Projects and Recruiting for the Frozen Tide, about the mascot and licensing issues that the team faces:

Who is your mascot?

Noble:  Tusc. He was made ten years ago when Mal Moore was in charge of the athletic department. We weren't allowed to use Big Al without paying a couple hundred dollars per game, but they allowed us to have Tusc.

Why do you not use Big Al?:

Noble: We are not organized under the athletic department.

What trademarked items associated with Alabama Athletics are you allowed to use?

Noble: We were licensed to use the script A on our uniform. That license was revoked earlier this year, but it appears that they are close to creating a new set of logos for club sports.

Has this affected the fan experience at your games?

Noble: Mostly it just causes confusion as to whether we are affiliated with the school.

Does this affect your ability to sell merchandise for the team?

Noble: We have not sold merchandise in almost a year because they revoked our license to use any marks without approval and we have not received marks that would be marketable.

What, if any, financial help do you receive from the university?

Noble: The University of Alabama Hockey team is supported by the University at the premier level of ACHA Hockey. Dr. Witt and Dr. Bonner have a history of support that is unparalleled across the country. We receive no funding from Athletics.

What are the chances Alabama Hockey could ever become a scholarship sport at the Capstone?

Noble: Inevitable.

Any message to the fans and supporters?

Noble: Come to the games. They are the most fun you are allowed to have in January and February. Our mascot was simply in an awkward position in that photograph where it's mouth was covered up by the trunk, this exaggerated the effect of the eyes. Most programs at our level don't have enough fans to even have a mascot. Remember this is only because of the amazing support of our fans and the jealousy surrounding the success of everything that happens at the Capstone.

Alabama Hockey's next three games will be played at their home ice at the Pelham Civic Complex, January 16th, 17th and 18th at 8pm, 7pm and 2pm respectively, all against Auburn for Iron Cup.
