In honor of National Girls’ and Women’s Sports Day and Black History Month, Cassandra Crumpton is an Alabama legend who deserves the spotlight. A

labama-native was born on October 29, 1962, and was destined to be a basketball star.
Her career started off at Clarendon Junior College where she became an NJCAA All-American in 1982. That same year, she transferred to Alabama where she made history for herself. Alabama was led to 39 wins in Crumpton’s career while also reaching its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in ’83. Regardless of the sport and era, Tennessee never stands a chance against the Tide. During the 83-84 season, Crumpton and the Tide took over the SEC Tournament with six ranked opponents, one of them being No. 10 Tennessee.
Bringing more dominance her senior season, she scored 17.4 points and was named the 1984 SEC tournament MVP. Her two years at Alabama gave her the honor of being All-SEC and the opportunity to participate in the 1984 Olympic Trials.

She traveled the world with playing four years in Spain, two in Italy, and one season in Turkey. During her career with Caixa Girona in Getafe, Spain, she became the leading scorer in the 1993 Spanish League All-Star game. Returning to the United States, she joined the Women’s National Basketball Association as a member of the New York Liberty. Her post-college career came to a close in the mid-’80s after playing on the WBL Champion Dallas Diamonds.
Crumpton spent some time at the University of Texas, serving as an assistant coach. She finally came back home to Alabama to join Rick Moody’s staff from 1997-2004.
