ATHENS, Ga. - The Alabama Crimson Tide faced its most daunting task of the season, and a test the Crimson Tide had not faced in 10 years: the Georgia Bulldogs between the hedges.

A win would put the Crimson Tide back in the driver's seat of the SEC championship race and quiet the doubters of Kalen DeBoer's ability to compete on the road. A loss would all but kill the Crimson Tide's College Football Playoff hopes before October even starts, and drop Kalen DeBoer to 2-6 away from Bryant-Denny Stadium to start his Alabama career (the two wins came against Wisconsin and LSU in 2024).

How would Alabama answer the call in Athens?

First Quarter

Alabama's defense was first out of the gate, and Kane Wommack's unit forced a three-and-out to start the game, highlighted by Deontae Lawson breaking up a third-down pass to Zachariah Branch. Ty Simpson then led Alabama down the field with a 14-play, 74-yard drive that ended in a six-yard score to senior wide receiver Germie Bernard. Alabama was rolling offensively to start the game against Georgia.

The Alabama defense was challenged again with stopping a Georgia offensive attack that hung 44 points on the Tennessee Volunteers. After just four plays, the Dawgs were forced to punt back to Alabama.

Second Quarter

Alabama's big scoring drive to start the second quarter began in the first. Alabama secured a 14-play, 83-yard touchdown drive that began eerily similar to the first touchdown drive Alabama had: a short gain by Jam Miller.

While Miller wasn't quite lighting up the statsheet, his efforts kept Alabama's drive alive multiple times, including setting the Tide up with first and goal after bouncing a run outside to save Alabama from a field goal attempt.

Ty Simpson then found Isaiah Horton to secure his second touchdown pass of the night on an impressive throw to the Miami transfer.

Georgia showcased its strong offense on the ensuing drive, with Gunner Stockton hitting Zachariah Branch, Chauncey Bowens rushing for 29 yards, and then Colbie Young beating Domani Jackson for a 38-yard touchdown for Georgia.

Alabama's offense didn't do anything with its possession, but the Crimson Tide defense decided the offense wasn't done. Bray Hubbard forced a fumble, and Deontae Lawson recovered at the Georgia 11-yard line, setting Alabama in favorable field position.

Alabama didn't do much with it, though, and after just four plays, five yards, and 1:28, Alabama brought on Conor Talty to kick a 24-yard field goal, which gave Alabama a 17-7 lead over Georgia.

The Dawgs responded by taking seven points to counteract Alabama's three on the previous drive, as running back Chauncey Bowens carved up the Crimson Tide's run defense on Georgia's drive. He capped it with a two-yard touchdown to cut the Tide's lead to three.

Alabama needed to quiet down the Georgia crowd, as a mere three-point lead had the Bulldogs back in the contest, and the crowd ready to explode if Georgia's defense could stop the Crimson Tide.

Alabama needed a quick two-minute offense and had no timeouts to make it easier on them. Ty Simpson did what he did best: surgically dissect an opposing defense. He did a little bit of everything on that drive, including a screen pass to 360-pound left tackle Kadyn Proctor.

Unfortunately for those of us who love a good thick-six, Proctor stepped out at the one. Fortunately for Alabama fans, Ty Simpson took the ball himself and secured his third touchdown on the night.

And that would end the first half as Georgia let the clock run out.

HALFTIME SCORE:

Alabama - 24
Georgia - 14

Ty Simpson had been masterful through the first half, completing 15-23 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns, adding six yards and a score on the ground. The key statistic of the first half, however, was that Simpson had not been sacked. Alabama needed more of that if it hoped to survive the inevitable second-half adjustments Kirby Smart and Georgia would make.

Third Quarter

The Crimson Tide went for 10 plays and 49 yards on the opening drive of the second half, but a whiff from Conor Talty that looked similar to Andy Pappanastos's missed kick to end the 2017 CFP National Championship regulation.

Georgia rose to the occasion and proved why Kirby Smart is one of the best coaches in the game, as the Dawgs responded with a six-play, 74-yard touchdown drive that took just 3:07 off the clock. A Josh McCray one-yard touchdown capped the drive. Alabama faced its biggest adversity of the night, with the Crimson Tide's lead cut down to three and all the momentum in favor of Georgia.

Alabama's offense sputtered out on a three-and-out, and it became gut-check time for Alabama's defense. If Georgia scored, Alabama would face its first deficit of the game.

Fourth Quarter

Georgia drove the ball into Alabama's redzone, and it looked poised for the Dawgs to take their first lead on Alabama. However, Alabama's defense swarmed, and LT Overton and Deontae Lawson gave Alabama the football back with a three-point lead. Alabama needed to score its first points of the second half to put some distance between itself and a hungry Georgia team.

Alabama's drive, while it took 3:27 off the clock, stalled out at midfield. Alabama failed to add points, and Georgia had a chance to tie or take the lead.

Alabama's defense held once again. The Crimson Tide offense was able to pick up just enough yardage for Alabama to secure a 24-21 victory over the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs.

Alabama Stat Leaders:

Passing: Ty Simpson - 24-38, 276 yards, 3 Total TD (2 Passing)
Rushing: Jam Miller - 16 carries, 46 yards
Receiving: Isaiah Horton - 5 catches, 65 yards, 1 TD

Alabama improves to 3-1 on the season, and the Crimson Tide will return to Bryant-Denny Stadium to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores next Saturday, October 4. Georgia falls to 3-1 and will return to Sanford Stadium next week to host Kentucky.
