Alabama Tight End Josh Cuevas Pitches Ty Simpson for the Heisman Trophy
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson has entered the Heisman Trophy race with his play so far this season, completing 67.8% of his passes for 2,184 yards and 20 touchdowns. Simpson has thrown just one interception so far this season and added 79 yards and two touchdowns in the running game.

Simpson is tied for the second-highest odds in the Heisman Trophy race, according to Fanduel Sportsbook. He sits alongside Ohio State first-year starter Julian Sayin (who originally signed as a member of Alabama's 2024 recruiting class), and both sit behind Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
Simpson has another month to cement himself as a Heisman Trophy candidate before the finalists travel to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony. The award will be presented to the winner on Saturday, December 13. During Alabama's bye week, tight end Josh Cuevas made his pitch for the Crimson Tide's signal caller to bring home the Heisman Trophy, and explained what Simpson does so well that has made Alabama 'ten times better.'
"I'm always gonna pull for my guy, man," Cuevas said. "Whatever I need to say, I'm gonna say it for Ty."
Why should Ty Simpson win the Heisman Trophy?
"I think he's the most universal kind of, like, well-rounded quarterback right now," Cuevas said. "I mean, I love my guy to death. I'm always gonna pull for him. So, I mean, any argument you shoot at me for anybody else, I'm going to be like, 'Yeah, I agree. I agree. But, I mean, my guy Ty. My guy Ty, you gotta give it to him.'"
Cuevas is having his best season as well. He stepped into the starting role this offseason and has caught 20 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns so far this season.
He gave credit to Simpson for getting him the ball, saying that "most of the plays, I'm not even one, two, or three in the progression."
"It's great for team chemistry also," Cuevas said of Simpson's ability to work through progressions. "I mean, Ty is able to get it to anybody on the field. Nobody's stats are super fluffed up, or we don't have a receiver that's getting 9,000 receptions a game. He's getting it to everybody, and that just adds to our team chemistry. I mean, that's just something that Ty is so good at is getting through his progression, getting through his reads, and it just makes us 10 times better."
Alabama has eight players with double-digit receptions. Germie Bernard leads the way with 38 receptions, with Ryan Williams right behind him with 33. Alabama also has Isaiah Horton (22), Cuevas (20), Kevin Riley (16), Lotzeir Brooks (16), Jam Miller (12), and Rico Scott (10) with double-digit receptions on the season.
Alabama is on a bye week this week, but will return to action next Saturday, November 8, when it hosts the LSU Tigers.
