Lawson After Iron Bowl Win: ‘When it Comes Down to it, We’re Going to Find a Way to Win.’
After Alabama's seven-point victory over Auburn in the Iron Bowl, senior linebacker Deontae Lawson spoke to the media. He discussed his crucial fumble recovery that helped seal the game and shared the team's mindset as they prepare for a rematch against Georgia in the SEC Championship. The Crimson Tide previously defeated Georgia 24-21 on September 27th.

Lawson began his press conference by responding to a question about his emotions after completing his time with the Crimson Tide without losing to Auburn in his five seasons. He expressed how incredible the experience has been, particularly since he grew up as an Auburn fan.
“Definitely an unbelievable experience growing up an Auburn fan, then having to make a business decision to come to Alabama, so to go 5-0 against those guys, man, it just makes me happy.”
Lawson played a massive part in tonight's victory, with the fifth-year senior linebacker finishing the night leading all Alabama players in Tackles with seven total, one tackle for loss, and a game-sealing fumble recovery with 33 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
The star linebacker of the Crimson Tide was asked about his fumble recovery, especially considering the times when the ball was loose, and the team failed to secure it. Lawson responded, “We knew that if we kept attacking the ball, we would eventually create turnovers.”
Lawson went on to thank his teammate Bray Hubbard, who had an excellent performance, recording two tackles, one interception, and forcing one fumble, which Lawson recovered.
“Big shout out to Bray Hubb, he's just a ball player. I call him a bad MF because that's what he is. He’s always finding a way to get the ball out, and I think that's the third time that he caused a fumble and I recovered it, so we got a little special connection to the bounds for sure.”
When asked why the Crimson Tide deserves to be a College Football Playoff team, Lawson highlighted the resiliency of himself and his teammates, as well as their ability to respond to adversity. He emphasized that if the Crimson Tide wins next weekend's SEC Championship game against Georgia, they will undoubtedly secure a spot in the playoffs.
“We’re just a resilient group; if you watch, we’ve been hit in the mouth and have responded.” Lawson added, “I know we can compete with anyone in the country. That's all phases of the game, and I know guys in the locker room, they're all fired up to get an opportunity, but first we've got to worry about the SEC championship.”
Lawson was asked about the team playing with a playoff mentality since week one’s loss to Florida State, which the Senior linebacker credits to the Tide’s resiliency, the preparation that the team put into the offseason, and the way that this team can find a way to win in almost any situation.
“We knew it could go either one or two ways. We had a great off-season, and you know, to come into this season with so much confidence and then get knocked off, it kinda makes you question a little bit, but not this group, man. We came together, we knew that we were unbreakable, that was our theme for the whole year. We knew we were resilient.” Lawson said, “When it comes down to it, we are gonna find a way to win, so that's just been what our theme is and what we've been preaching.”
Alabama will look to build on this win heading into next week, when the Tide plays Georgia in a rematch in the SEC Championship on Saturday, December 6th, at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
