Did Hornets Sting Tide Women?
The Alabama women's basketball team opened its 2023-24 season with a resounding 93-39 win over Alabama State at Coleman Coliseum.
Said Alabama Head Caoach Kristy Curry: "Excited to kick off the season. I thought we had some improvements since our scrimmage with Alabama-Huntsville."
Curry started Loyal McQuuen, Sarah Ashlee Barker, Essence Cody, Aaliyah Nye and Karly Weathers in the opener. After Cody scored inside and Weathers posted two buckets of her own in the opening 58 seconds, the Hornets called time out and, well, the rout was on.
After Barker scored five straight points to put the Tide up 16-0, the visitors from Montgomery called another time out.
By intermission, the Tide was up 45-16 and Barker already had 16 of her team high 23 points.
Barker said, "It''s not about me. It's about the team. I want to than my coaches."
Barker was joined in double figures by Jessica Timmons with 18 points while Cody added 11 in her college debut.
The top rebounders for Alabama with eight each were Barker, Cody and Naomi Jones.
Next up for the Crimson Tide is a Friday home game with Wintrhop with tip time set for 4:30 p.m. That game, like Monday's, is part of a doubleheader with the Alabama men's team.
