Eli Gold Reflects on His Call of Alabama vs. Georgia [Audio]
Throughout much of Alabama’s 125-year history, talented broadcasters including Mel Allen, Gabby Bell and John Forney have graced the airwaves to provide fans the play-by-play call of Crimson Tide football.
Since 1989, Eli Gold has been the man describing the plays on every football Saturday for the Crimson Tide Sports Network.
During his appearance on Inside the Locker Room, the veteran CTSN play-by-play broadcaster reflected on his call of Tua Tagovailoa’s game-winning touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith against Georgia and described what goes into his preparation for calling an Alabama football game.
At the beginning of the conversation with Wimp and Barry Sanderson, Gold talks about his pregame discussions with CTSN producer and engineer Tom Stipe regarding how he would call a possible Alabama win over Georgia.
When asked about how he approaches the highs and lows of a game, the veteran CTSN broadcaster mentioned one thing he reminds himself never to do on a call of a big play.
“I always remind myself, ‘Don’t make a fool of yourself.’” Gold said.
He later gave an explanation of why he gives himself that message.
“I hate it when you hear these highlights and then the guys on ESPN make fun of the broadcaster because he went out of his mind.” Gold said.
Gold also pointed out how his calls of Alabama’s biggest plays like the game-winning pass against Georgia will be replayed forever.
“I’m very cognizant of the fact that that play is going to be listened to forever whether it’s on shows like this (Inside the Locker Room) or ESPN or at the Bryant Museum.” Gold said.
The voice of Alabama football also went over how he handled the change in quarterbacks from Jalen Hurts to Tua Tagovailoa, Hurts’ handling of the quarterback change and which games present the biggest challenges in terms of preparation.
