Athletes will have the option of playing varsity sports at Tuscaloosa County High School or Brookwood High School, depending on where they live. Players will be able to continue attending Holt and playing varsity sports for one of the two teams, or they can attend the school where they are already playing varsity sports.

This decision was taken in response to a drop in athletics participation at the school, which resulted in Holt having financial difficulties maintaining the programs, according to TCSS.

In a statement signed by Holt High School Principal Daniel Dickins and TCSS Superintendent Keri Johnson, they discussed doing what was best for the success of Holt's student athletes, stating, "This decision is motivated by what is in the best interests of our current and future students. Club sports and extracurricular activities will continue at Holt High School."

With athletics being terminated, TCSS stated that their objective is to provide other possibilities, including "Career Tech and STEAM-focused (Science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) courses." Further in the statement, the Tuscaloosa County School System reassured teachers that they will keep their employment, saying, "If you hear someone claiming that we are cutting teacher positions at Holt High, that is also false."

According to a statement from TCSS, a follow-up meeting is scheduled for February 10, 2025, at Holt High School's café to discuss the next steps moving forward. One thing is certain: Holt High will continue to operate as a school. The statement also clarified, "It is untrue that Holt High students will be sent to other schools or that they will need to apply to attend Holt High in the future." TCSS reassured the community, saying, "Holt High is not being dissolved."
