Hurricane Delta Could Force Bama-Ole Miss Game to Move
Many high school football teams around Alabama announced that they would be moving their games to Thursday, after the path of Hurricane Delta was discovered to be hitting the Gulf Coast later this week,. To add on to the preparation for the Category 4 storm, rumors have been stirring on social media that Alabama’s road trip to Oxford could potentially be altered.
The Crimson Tide (2-0) are set to kick off against the Ole Miss Rebels (1-1) at 5 p.m. on Saturday, but the hurricane is expected to make landfall early Saturday morning.
In addition to the Alabama-Ole Miss game, an LSU home game against Missouri at 8 p.m. and an Auburn home matchup against Arkansas at 3 p.m. are being watched by the SEC.
It has become a yearly occurrence with the increase in severity of hurricane season to cancel or move around college football games, so this is not a new phenomenon. In fact, in 2017, seven different games were affected by tropical storms and hurricanes.
For the Crimson Tide though, it has been a while since they have played a regular season game on a day other than Saturday. In 2010, Alabama played Georgia State on a Thursday (a 63-7 victory) and Auburn the next week on a Friday (a 28-27 loss). While it has been a relatively normal occurrence for the Iron Bowl to be held on Friday, the Georgia State game was moved to give Alabama enough time to prepare for their cross-state rivals.
While Hurricane Delta has increased in severity as of Tuesday, it is still uncertain what will happen. Regardless, the SEC has announced that they are in contact with member schools and will surely allow enough time for affected teams to prepare.
