Is Jameson Williams an Underrated Receiver Right Now?
The Detroit Lions had a much better season last year as they finished with a 9-8 record, despite missing the playoffs. Jared Goff made his third Pro Bowl season. He finished with 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The offensive weapons the Lions have drafted throughout the past few years, including former Alabama receiver Jameson Williams, have been a huge help to finding their identity offensively.
Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown are looking to be one of the best receiving duos in the NFL this year. St. Brown had a breakout season last year as he recorded six touchdowns and more than 1,160 receiving yards. If Williams can record similar stats and provide the Lions' receiving core with speed, they could have a shot at making the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Williams did not see any action until week 14 against the Minnesota Vikings, however, as he was still recovering from the torn ACL he suffered in the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship. In the only game he played, he recorded a 41-yard receiving touchdown to help the Lions take down the Vikings 34-23. This was his only reception of the season as well.
Williams was one of the most electrifying receivers in college football in 2021. He tallied 15 touchdowns and more than 1,500 receiving yards for the Crimson Tide. He was known for outrunning defenders as a kick return specialist, and even scored two kick return touchdowns in the same night against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.
Put all of that together, and despite his first round draft selection, you've got the biggest second-year sleeper in the NFL.
