Josh Cuevas Adjusting to New Leadership Role
Tuscaloosa, Ala. - With the departures of CJ Dippre and Robbie Outz to the NFL, Alabama will be looking for a new veteran presence in the tight end room in 2025. Josh Cuevas, who transferred to Alabama from Washington last spring, is preparing to step into that role along the Alabama offensive front.

"Definitely, going into this year, it's definitely a little bit of an adjustment just kind of stepping into that leadership role a little bit more and helping the younger guys mold into that system that we're trying to get going," Cuevas said on Tuesday. "Some of the younger guys coming in, working on them a bit, but CJ [Dippre] and Robbie [Outz] are definitely sticking around, sticking their head into the room a bit more, giving some tips. So I definitely wouldn't say I'm doing it alone."
Cuevas provided some insight as well into what Alabama's goals are with the tight ends going into 2025.
"Right now, I think we're trying to, trying to mold everybody into an all down tight end, for sure. With this offense, I mean, we're trying to get everybody do everything, especially with — our room's a little young. So right now we're kind of getting things a little bit rolling. So right now we're just trying to mold everybody into an all down tight end. And, right now, whatever they're good at, the coaches are going to put them in for."
CJ Dippre was a traditional tight end at Alabama, while Robbie Outz was a hybrid, H-back type. How does Cuevas see himself?
"I want to do a little bit of both, for sure," Cuevas said, "and I think this coaching staff trusts me enough to put me in a position to where I'm going to succeed, either on the ball or spread out wide."
"But I'm working on both. Spring balls is little bit about development, getting going, and then we'll be ready for fall camp in the season."
The 6-foot-3, 252-pound transfer finished with the fourth-most catches on the team last season (16) for 216 yards. His lone touchdown of the year came against Wisconsin.
The Crimson Tide looks vastly different from then. Dippre and Outz, along with the quarterback who threw Cuevas the touchdown, Jalen Milroe, have all departed for the NFL. Additionally, Ryan Grubb has returned to the Alabama staff as the offensive coordinator.
Grubb and Cuevas have a history of working together, dating back to 2023 at Washington.
"I love it," Cuevas said.
