Tuscaloosa, AL – In a commanding performance, the Alabama Crimson Tide emerged victorious against Mercer, with Head Coach Kalen DeBoer commending his team for their robust play and strategic execution. Speaking at the postgame press conference, DeBoer highlighted several key aspects that contributed to the win.

Defensive Takeaways and Ball Control

“We liked that we got three more takeaways. I think there’s a mindset for our defense … We’re hunting the ball,” DeBoer stated, emphasizing the defense’s aggressive approach. He attributed much of the team’s success to their ability to secure takeaways and maintain control of the football. “For the most part, taking care of the football, and getting the takeaways, that’s where it all starts.”

Preparation and Demeanor

DeBoer noted the team’s focused preparation leading up to the Mercer game. “The team had a good demeanor about it in prep for the Mercer game,” he said, reflecting on the disciplined and professional approach his players took during the week.

Robbie Ouzts’ Versatility

One standout player was Robbie Ouzts, whom DeBoer described as a “Swiss army knife” for the team. “He’s got a mindset, a toughness about him,” DeBoer added, praising Ouzts’ versatility and resilience on the field.

Ty Simpson and Backup Quarterbacks

Ty Simpson’s rushing ability also caught DeBoer’s attention. He expressed pride in the way the backup quarterbacks managed the offense. “I was proud of the way the backup quarterbacks handled everything in running the offense,” he commented, noting the depth and preparedness of his roster.

Non-Offensive Touchdown

The non-offensive touchdown by Zabien Brown was another highlight. “For us to get him in the end zone with that long return, it’s something that’s exciting for the whole team,” DeBoer said, acknowledging the momentum such plays bring to the squad.

First-Team Defense and Leadership

DeBoer explained the rationale behind keeping the first-team defense on the field longer than the offense. “There’s a lot of guys rotating in on defense to begin with … There’s less experience when you put the 2s out there,” he noted, stressing the importance of gaining valuable game-time experience.

As the season progresses, DeBoer observed a noticeable increase in focus and intensity among his players. “As we get to the latter half of the season, we have really honed in on more and more leaders stepping up … There’s a business-like approach.”

Jihaad Campbell’s Leadership

Jihaad Campbell’s intensity on defense was a focal point for DeBoer. “That’s a great example of you don’t have to have the C to be a leader,” he said. “He’s been a leader for us ever since I can remember … He can run, it starts there. The more and more he plays ball, executes the plays, understands our defense and how it matches up with what he’s seeing … He’s feeling it. There’s confidence he has you can see coming out in playmaking ability.”

Injuries and Player Development

Regarding player injuries and development, DeBoer mentioned that while Jaeden Roberts could have played, they opted to give Geno VanDeMark some work at right guard. “Roberts was dinged up in the LSU game,” he explained.

Ryan Williams’ Team Spirit

Finally, DeBoer had high praise for Ryan Williams, highlighting his team-first mentality. “Nothing goes to his head. He’s about the team. A joy to be around,” DeBoer said, commending Williams’ maturity and contribution to the team’s morale.

As the Alabama Crimson Tide looks ahead, DeBoer’s focus on discipline, leadership, and strategic execution promises to drive the team toward continued success.
