Nick’s Kids Foundation Donates $1M To Tuscaloosa
At this year's annual Nick's Kids luncheon, Nick and Terry Saban, along with the Nick's Kids foundation, presented the city of Tuscaloosa with a massive million dollar donation.
The donation is meant to go toward the newly proposed Saban Discovery Center which was approved to move into the design phase earlier this week, as reported by the Tuscaloosa Thread.
This is just one of multiple donations the Sabans have made to the project, with their total contribution coming out to nearly $2 million, Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said at Wednesday's event.
The project has a proposed cost of $45 million, but Maddox says the Sabans have been instrumental in helping raise funds.
"20-percent of that will be funded through people like Nick and Terry Saban, and as of today have given two million dollars to this project," Maddox said, speaking on the proposal.
The Nick's Kids foundation, since settling in Tuscaloosa upon Saban's arrival, has overseen multiple large scale projects aimed at helping local residents.
As of 2022, the foundation has built 18 homes in honor of Alabama's 18 national championships, and is completing another this year despite the Tide coming up short in last year's title game.
Since 2012, the foundation has also put on the Annual Teacher's Excellence Awards Luncheon, and has honored over 400 local teachers for their commitment to education.
The Saban Discovery Center is projected to open in 2025 and per the Nick's Kids Foundation, "will combine STEM programs and the arts to provide a unique and interactive learning experience for children in Tuscaloosa."
