Stillman Women's Basketball Falls To William Carrey In Playoffs

The Stillman College women's basketball season has officially ended after a tough loss to William Carey.

Stillman College's 2021-2022 season ended Thursday morning with a 63-53 loss to William Carey University in the Quarterfinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference Basketball Championships, presented by Newk's Eatery.

Stillman (15-12, 8-8 SSAC) had cold spurts in the first half, being out-scored 13-8 and 9-6 in the opening quarter. An eight-minute scoring drought in the second quarter opened the door for a 13-10 game to balloon into a 22-10 William Carey lead with 1:40 left in the first half. It was 24-14 at halftime.

Carey (13-11) opened the second half with a 9-0 run and eventually led by 25 points, 44-19, with 3:28 left in the third quarter. Stillman closed the third quarter on a 10-2 run. The Tigers chipped away in the fourth quarter to make it a 10-point difference by the final buzzer.

Laneja Warner led all players with 16 points and Amaria Strong scored 13.

Lauren Rowley led WCU with 14 points, followed by Rebekaj Engle's 12 points and nine rebounds, and 10 points by Gabrielle Gallup. McKinley Seal had seven points and nine assists.

Though Stillman shot 40.8% from the field, the Tigers were held to 31 rebounds compared to William Carey's 41.

Stillman opened the 2021-2022 season in October with a 4-0 start, the program's best start since 2002-03. Stillman entered Christmas break with a 6-5 record and had a month between games before returning to action on Jan. 13 in New Orleans to upset No. 24 Loyola University, 53-52. Though Stillman lost its next three games, went 2-1 to close out January, and then won five straight to open February and position itself in second place in the SSAC. Loses to Loyola and William Carey to close the regular season moved Stillman to fifth in the SSAC, setting up Thursday's SSAC quarterfinal rematch against William Carey - the second meeting in five days.
