Super Bowl LXII Plans For Atlanta
Exciting news for Georgia residents as Super Bowl LXII 2028 is set to be awarded by NFL leaders next month when owners meet in Atlanta. This would be Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s second Super Bowl in nine years.
In 2019, the New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 in the first Super Bowl to be hosted in Mercedes-Benz Stadium since its opening on August 26, 2017.
Construction for this marvelous stadium began in 2014 in a plan to replace the Georgia Dome which opened on September 6, 1992, and was home to the Atlanta Falcons for 25 seasons.
An estimated 1.6 Billion dollars went into building Mercedes-Benz Stadium which is a big jump from the estimated $214 million spent building the Georgia Dome.
After building the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Georgia Dome was demolished on Nov 20, 2017.
Atlanta is no stranger to big games as the city has hosted: the 1994 and 2000 Super Bowls. The 1996 Summer Olympics Basketball, SEC and ACC men’s basketball tournaments, SEC Championship game, and USA indoor track and field championships.
An NFC Championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the Atlanta Falcons would be the final game ever played in the Georgia Dome before moving to Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
It is no surprise that the NFL would like to bring the Super Bowl back to the city of Atlanta. With the Stadium seating 71,000, it can also expand to over 75,000 for major events. In 2022 the stadium reached record attendance for the Peach Bowl which counted 79,330 people.
The Super Bowl generates an estimated $300 million to 1.3 Billion dollars in revenue for the host city; Super Bowl 2023 generated 1.3 Billion dollars for the host city of Glendale, Arizona. An estimated 60% of all Americans viewed the 2023 Super Bowl.
In an article from cnr.ncsu.edu, Mike Edwards, who studies the legacy of mega sporting events believes the economic impacts of the Super Bowl are overly exaggerated with the game likely only generating $150 million in net income to residents. It is still a positive outcome for a city such as Atlanta.
