Jason Torres’ ‘Senior Moment’ Lifts Crimson Tide to Series Win Over Ole Miss
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Crimson Tide clinched its series finale against Ole Miss with a dominant 6-2 triumph in Saturday’s rubber match. Senior third baseman Jason Torres shone, driving in two runs, collecting two hits, and making several impressive defensive plays in Alabama’s four-run victory over the Rebels.

After Alabama's decisive rubber match victory over No. 15 Ole Miss, head coach Rob Vaughn discussed Jason Torres’s standout performance. Vaughn also explained his decision to move Torres from the sixth spot to the cleanup position in the batting order, replacing freshman Eric Hines, who had occupied the cleanup role in recent series.
“You guys know how I feel about that guy [Jason Torres] and that guy has taken some flak at times this year and there was nobody more deserving in that moment than JT, and I thought the right move he had Brady Neal up with first base open, right vs right coming up, its the right move to try and go get Jason there, but man we actually consciously talked about it. I gotta give Coach Morrison some credit, we were talking in the locker room about the lineup, we knew kinda what we wanted to do, and he kinda looked at me and said, ‘man, JT he took great swings yesterday, I don't know if he had much to show for it yesterday, but great swings yesterday. Just felt like he was seeing the ball really, really well, and two things were like maybe let's get him in a position where it lets Eric [Hines] get a little bit more, take a breath there in the sixth, and get JT up in that big spot there.”
Torres has posted a .243 batting average this season, leading the team with 45 RBIs and hitting seven home runs.
In SEC play, Torres has struggled, batting just .194 with 21 hits and 16 RBIs over 30 conference games.
That changed in today’s game, as Torres went two-for-four at the plate and drove in two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After the Rebels intentionally walked Neal to load the bases with two outs, Torres capitalized with a single off shortstop Owen Paino’s glove, bringing home Peyton Steele and Luke Vaughn. This put Alabama ahead 5-2.
Vaughn elaborated on Torres’s clutch single in the fourth inning, describing it as a "senior moment." The head coach praised Torres’s character and leadership, noting how much he means to the program and expressing the emotional impact of seeing him deliver in that pivotal situation.
“It was just such a cool moment. When he came up, we said, ‘This is a senior moment we’ve been waiting for.’ and to see him come through for it was like, it gets you a little bit emotional on those moments because it's like that kid cares so much and he loves these guys so much and he’s emptied so much into this program, and for him to step up in that moment and get that big hit was pretty special.”
Torres was also flawless defensively in Game Three of the Senior Finale, recording a perfect fielding percentage. He made two key plays at third base, including a difficult stop on a ball headed toward left field and a strong throw to first for an out in the top of the ninth inning.
Alabama will rely on Torres to carry his momentum into the SEC Tournament in Hoover next week. The Tide has clinched the fourth seed, earning a double bye with their first game scheduled for Thursday. Alabama also secured the right to host a regional, and possibly a super regional, after making a strong case for a national seed. The team’s six SEC series wins mark a feat not achieved by Alabama baseball since 2006.
