Trevon Diggs is About to Get Paid
The Dallas Cowboys are about to do something that many NFL teams will hate them for in the future, reset the cornerback market. Trevon Diggs, the former Alabama defensive back who has become a star for "America's Team", is in talks right now to become the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
Since being drafted by the Cowboys with the 51st overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Diggs has been one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. Along with Micah Parsons and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, the Cowboys went from the 28th-best defense in 2020 to a top-10 defense in the last two years.
Stefon Diggs' brother is the perfect cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys because he makes a lot of highlight plays. Unlike Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward, who is a lockdown cornerback, Diggs always plays the ball instead of the receiver.
This high-risk, high-reward playstyle lets up many yards but also brings in interceptions. In 2021, the Alabama alum tied Everson Walls for the most interceptions by a Dallas Cowboys player in a season at 11 interceptions.
The question now is How Much will Diggs get from the Cowboys?
Last year, Jaire Alexander of the Green Bay Packers broke Ward's record and became the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. His contract from the Packers is a four-year, $84 million deal, with $21 million annually. Diggs will most likely break Alexander's record but how much is he really going to get?
According to Over the Cap, the Cowboys have $20 million in cap space this year. The Cowboys have the money to sign Diggs but the amount will determine whether Jerry Jones is willing to give up other players. Besides Diggs, "America's Team" is also in talks with star wide receiver, Ceedee Lamb, on getting him a long-term extension. This also does not take into account that Parson's contract will for sure be one of the richer contracts in the NFL.
The Cowboys have lots of decisions regarding money to make in the future, but keeping Diggs in Dallas is a top priority.
